BacPac is fast backup software for OpenVMS VAX
and Alpha platforms, combining state of the art file compression
technology, client/server architecture, and network
communications. Additionally, it allows you to duplicate or copy whole disks,
files or directories to remote systems.
BacPac can be used in combination with or in place of the VMS Backup utility
to speed up backup operations.
BacPac allows you to take advantage of your fast VAX or Alpha processors to
improve your backups by putting compression in the host where it can be more effective.
This results in speed improvements because:
Less data is transferred over the tape drive interface
Better compression in the host results in smaller savesets
and less tape movement
Smaller savesets allow disk-to-disk backups to be extremely
fast
BacPac also allows remote backups over DECnet from one OpenVMS computer to
another. Its client/server architecture allows you to

Backup local disks to a remote tape drive or disk
Initiate a backup from either the local or remote computer
